Mykonos’ people are still original, dedicating to animal husbandry and agriculture, fishing and traditional sponge diving.

Nevertheless, tourismus has become the major source of income, although traditional professions like chiseller, pottery painter or weaver still exist.

The young people that have not emigrated to the Greek mainland, predominantly live in Mykonos' capital, whilst the elder population prefers living in the rural areas of the island's hinterland.
