Mykonos' People

More than 97 % of the population are members of the Greek Orthodox Church. Ikon veneration is widespread and many inhabitants possess their own little chapel, usually connected to their dwelling house, or situated nearby on a field.

Because the orthodox belief was opressed during the Ottoman rule, a profound sense of national identity has developped, rooted in religion, and is maintained up to today.

Traditional hospitality is uncontested, deeply anchored in social life and applied towards each foreigner.
