Mykonos

Geography

Mykonos‘ surface is of 86 square kilometres, and it has about 9,300 inhabitants. The resulting high population density is even increased during the summer season with the tourists. Mykonos is made of a bare granite surface, reaching up to 360 m of altitude.

Together with its neighbor islands Syros in the west, Tinos in the north and Naxos in the south, Mykonos belongs to what used to be the Cyclades inner circle. The Cyclades were named so because of their circular alignment around the holy island of Delos, deriving from Greek “kyklos” meaning circle.

Mykonos, being located more in the south, was formerly not counted among the Cyclades. Its capital is also called Mykonos (Mykonos City) or, as it is custom on many Greek islands, Chora.
